Maytag Neptune Dryer with a Split Drum

Customer called with a complaint that her 7-year old Maytag Neptune MDE9700AYW dryer would hum when started then click off.  Also said the drum would not turn by hand.  What could the problem be?  The answer may surprise you!

Epilogue: Turns out this is not covered under warranty. The failure occurred right at the seam where the drum was welded together.  Total fee to replace this drum, part and labor, is over $400.  I recommended that the customer purchase a new Whirlpool dryer with a lint filter on the top panel and no electronic controls, just knobs and switches, available at Sears for less than $500.  She’s going to go that route.

Fixing a Whirlpool VM Washer that gets Stuck in the Cycle

This is the new Whirlpool top-loading high-efficiency washer, called the Vertical Modular Washer (VMW). The customer called in the complaint that her washer was not progressing in the cycle. Sometimes, the fix is easy… IF you understand how washers work and know what you’re looking for.  Watch as The Appliance Guru zeros right in on the problem with breathtaking speed.

This customer is on a well (dug well, not a drilled well) and doesn’t use any sediment filters in her water supply.  The hot water side is never a problem because the hot water tank acts like a settling basin.  Can you imagine what the inside of that hot water tank looks like?  So the solution is to install a simple sediment filter in the water supply that can be changed as needed and protects the water heater and all wet appliances.

Troubleshooting a No-Spin No-Agitate Problem on a Whirlpool VM Washer, Part 1

This is a recent service call I did on one of the newer Whirlpool top-loading HE washers, the so-called Vertical Modular Washer (VMW).  This is a low-end, rinky-dink machine that has very questionable durability.

The complaint on this washer is no-spin, no-agitate.  For this complaint on this washer, you want to check out: the belt, the drive pulley, the mode shifter, the transmission.

This video shows:

– How to put the control board into diagnostic mode to display error codes

– The main drive components underneath the washer

– How to remove the control console to access the control board

– The location of the wire harness to do electrical tests on the mode shifter

Unjamming a Samsung Icemaker

Sometimes, when an ice maker stops working, it’s something simple. In this case, it was an ice clump stuck between the ice maker and the compartment wall jamming the ice maker.

This particular Samsung refrigerator is model number RFG297HDWP/XAA. It’s a French Door / bottom freezer unit with the ice maker in the upper (fresh food) compartment in its own little cubby. Watch with amazement as The Appliance Guru practices his art.

Sometimes, it’s not this simple. In fact, in this particular model group, it’s very common for the ice maker to fail; many professional servicers will even stock the ice maker as truck stock. If you’re not as lucky as the folks in this video, you’ll need to replace the ice maker. You can buy it here with a 365-day return policy ==> http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Ice-Maker-Assembly/DA9707365A/2002456

Old Business, New Name

It’s a brave new day for the Brown Family of New London!  We’re re-launching our in-home appliance service business with a new name: The Appliance Guru.

Why?  Well, our other business name, Fixitnow.com Samurai Appliance Repair Man, plays well on the web but we discovered not so good as a service business.  For one thing, people just could not seem to remember the web site address, Fixitnow.com.  Invariably, they’d ask, “What was it again, Fixit.com?”  We actually had a local writer do an entire article in a local magazine about our site and she re-named it, “Fixitagain.com!”

Why fight a losing battle?  What seems clear, straightforward, and easy to remember for us clearly is not for others who don’t have the familiarity we do with that name.

Also, the Samurai thing is great schtick for the web but we found that most people in this area just didn’t get the humor.

We thought briefly about making it “Fix It Now Appliance Repair” but that’s impersonal and still has the “fix it now” problem which doesn’t seem to click with people’s memories.

Now comes “The Appliance Guru.”  What’s not to like?  It’s memorable.  It’s got a great web URL to go with it.  It’s personal (evokes a person, not a faceless company).  Seems like a winner to us!

Behind the scenes, the same people are running things:  Scott Brown, Ace technician extraordinaire, chief cook and bottlewasher; and Susan Brown, bookkeeper, job-juggler, and main cheerleader.

So, if you have an appliance repair problem, call on us.  We’re long-time locals and you’re supporting a local business.  And your money stays local because we shop local, too.
