That would explain the random temps recorded each time the flame goes out, but you should see the ignitor start to glow again then just go out and keep repeating this cycle. It sounds like from the data you are giving us you may not be waiting for the ignitor to cycle on/off again, once the flame goes out let it keep running for at least 5 minutes and keep watching the ignitor to see if it cycles on/off again without lighting the burner.

10-4 to Willie. Let it run, do not stop it again. Set her on 50 minutes time dry and let her go. You can do this with the front off since it is just for testing purposes. What we are looking for is does the igniter ever glow without gas coming out. Also, I believe the front panel on this unit has a small plastic plug right under the lip, about 3 inches up from the bottom of the unit. This is a sight whole for viewing the igniter and flame when the front is on. Pop it out with a screw driver.

Don't believe you will find any kind of viewing port on that Maytag Dependable care dryer. I can't think of any gas Maytag's that have a view port at all unless it actually has the 4" x 4" door to open on front to access gas valve and coils.

Hi...busy last night, couldn't get to it. Thanks for your patience. Today, I started the machine on 50 minutes dry time, with the front cover off and ran it for 30 minutes. Initially, the ignitor glowed and ignited the gas and the flame lasted 50 seconds and quit. As the drum kept rolling, one minute later, the ignitor glowed again and the flame came on and lasted 30 seconds. One minute later, the flame came on and extinguished 10 seconds later. Afterward, for the next half hour, the ignitor glowed consistently at the end of every minute and then went off without any gas being released. However, there was a grinding or vibrating noise each time about 2 seconds before the ignitor began glowing. It would stop shortly afterward. On two occasions, thinking that I might not be hearing the gas being released I placed a lit match opposite the ignitor when it had stopped glowing but there was no gas present; nothing happened. On top of the gas tube there is a small component consisting of two black cylinders about 1 1/2 inches tall and about an inch and an eighth in diameter. There are two separate wire connectors, about four wires each,leading to these towers. At first I put a pen on top of the plate going across the two stacks and thought I could feel vibration. Later, a bit braver, I put my finger on that plate and there is definitely a vibration just before the ignitor begin glowing. My guess is that that device is the coil? Anyway, the cycle of glowing ignitor and no flame continued to repeat itself without change. And that was the extent of my testing. By the by, there is no port in the front cover. However, there is a screw hole the same size as the corner screw holes used to secure the cover. It is in alignment with those two holes and it is possible that you might be able to detect a glow though it although it is not exactly in line with the tube with the ignitor. You got yourself some bad coils. Easy fix to keep her drying. The viewing hole I'm talking about Willie is a small 1/8" hole with a plastic plug under the same lip as the front screws are under. Picture below shows it, #18. It looks a lot bigger in the photos, but it is just big enough to view the combustion chamber. Attachment: Front Panel.png (Downloaded 17 times)

Thank you for the info. I'm leaving for MN in an hour and won't be back for a week...I'll buy the coils (thanks for the link)and install when I get back. At present, I've had my mail delivery stopped. #18 in the diagram is exactly when the 1/8 hole is on my dryer, but there is no plug of any sort...maybe they forgot to plug it at the factory. Thanks again.

Probably fell off or was taken off by someone looking through it and never put back. Pop the coils on when you get back and start drying those clothes!

Hi, The coils were in the mail when I picked it up...they fit nicely and the dryer is doing what it supposed to be doing. Many thanks for all of the help and the parts link. I was in MN a little longer than I anticipated. And, as things seem to happen in pairs, at least, a new problem has arisen: the stove's broiler. I'm off to another category.
