I really doubt the clothes are getting torn in the washer. Usually, it's the dryer that's doing the damage. Check the felt seal and drum rollers in the dryer.

If it is the washer causing it see how much they are stuffing into the unit, could be overloading the hell out of it.....

And of course, make sure the inner basket hasn't dropped down, (from bad bearings), and letting a big gap to catch the clothes.

If it is a deut dryer, look at the front bulkhead, part with the rollers/seal. point where the separate parts are joined......upper right and left or lower left and right.....had one that sounds like the same complaint.....  But if the customer is seeing  gashes after removing them from the washer, look for something caught in one of the holes in the spin basket...screw, nail,

I just had one that the bearings sounded fine but the shaft of the wash basket had a groove machined into it allowing the basket to droop down a bit. I replaced both the outer tub and wash basket assembly but the bearings spun freely and showed no signs of wear, i think they had a batch of baskets where the shaft wasnt hardend enough
