Message on self diagnostic is saying blower not working properly; we had it replaced in November, but it started making this rat-at-at noise and now today the heat quit altogether but noise quit. when we removed front cover we can't turn the wheel at all without lifting it up by hand. i called GE and of course they want a service call and labor to fix it even tho the part is warranted; i suspect it's that the blower wheel isn't turning.... any ideas? if we need to remove blower wheel, how do we undo that bit bolt that seems to be holding it on?

Ahh, GE's ironically-named "Harmony" dryer. The noise could be the blower wheel/blower motor. Is this what you're referring to when you say, "...we can't turn the wheel at all without lifting it up by hand." And what, exactly are you "lifting up?" A picture can help immensely with sight-unseen internet diagnoses. Hint, hint. Here's one of the guts of this dryer for you:

that big white piece of plastic; inside is that wheel....when we took the front cover off the dryer, we noticed that this wheel would not turn now at ALL without putting our hand underneat this housing and lifting up that whole white plastic assembly; my guess is that maybe since the wheel was no longer turning, the motor would shut off and thus no heat, no blowing. That plastic housing is anchored at the bottom by a small screw...and now we have put a 'riser' of sorts, so that it allows the wheel to spin. Before this blessed event, the wheel was making one heck of a racket, like there were marbles inside the wheel...then the noise quit (wheel froze?) and heat quit. Harmony - put your hands together and ..... could this be the fix?

Go by what you see. Is the blower wheel binding on anything? Could the blower motor have come loose from it's mounts? Still a little fuzzy on the "won't turn unless lifted" thing that's why there's a slim chance there's something wrong with the mounting. But I'm having trouble seeing it from here. Help an old Samurai out.

well okay....when we opened up the front, we noticed that if you took your fingers and tried to spin the wheel, it was pressing on the bottom of the housing, and thus would not spin. when we put our hand under that housing, (round part) and lifted, the wheel spins beautifully free as if a bird in flight  What I'm thinking is that for some reason, dryer not balanced, that bottom screw had come loose...that it caused the wheel not to 'spin' and thus shut down the heating...b/c we had been hearing this noise but the dryer was heating fine. We are putting it back together now, and will let you know if this fixed anything

WE HAVE HEAT! the dryer still isn't the whisper quiet appliance that I would expect...but it's hot as a pistol with wet sheets in there, and so far so good...

Red arrow is where the screw that holds down this assembly...we installed a riser of sorts that then allowed the wheel to spin; without it, it was dragging on the bottom of the housing Attachment: dryerthing.jpg (Downloaded 48 times)

Yep, stumped us, too.... here's the history - initially blower motor went out, GE came and installed 400+ dollars later it worked. A 6-7 week period went by when the dryer started rattling; we didn't want to risk calling GE back as the 30 day labor warranty was us; they'd find something else surely. We took apart dryer and noticed that the sound we were hearing was this wheeling flapping, and when we lift up the assembly it quit. We installed a riser at that time, and it quit for awhile but then started up again. I thought "noisy by drying" was fine, but then today noise stopped, and so did drying. .....then we did above. Now that noise is gone, it's not whisper quiet but doing fine on second load of towels.

Well, as we used to say at me dear Alma Mater, "Sumpin' ain't raht!" I think you need to figger out what's wrong with the blower housing 'cuz it'll keep happening until the proper fix is in. Maybe this diagram will help.

Wondering if both clips are in place to hold motor, and if motor is in proper position. If the motor is o.k. , then the housing must be out of place some where. The only guesses I can come up with at the moment..

Sorry, I have to resurrect this one. We have the same dryer, having the same problem. Error code reads "blower motor not getting up to speed." But we get lucky at times and the dryer runs peachy keen for a couple weeks and then quits on us with the same error message upon entering diagnostic mode. I get the feeling the blower motor is fine, but that it has somehow come out of alignment and that is causing the whole problem. In fact, we can hear a vibration that I definitely know is not a factor "harmonic effects" option; it did indeed occur as something rattled loose. So the question I have to ask is this: Did you ever get this sorted out and if so, what was the solution? Any problems since? Anyone else have problems with this? I know, after doing a ton of searching, that anyone that owns this dryer eventually runs into this problem. The thing is folks, this dryer is absolutely amazing and is worth the time and effort to figure out how to get this thing running top again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyone??? after motor replacement i was called back for noise..the element and sheetmetal vibrated loudly.would come and go as heat came on and off.replaced the blower wheel which appeared perfect.the vibration and noise went away. over a month now with no recall. so try that

Well as it turns out, the blower motor finally quit for good this time. So I got right in there after taking everything apart (you really have to disassemble this whole thing good to get to it). It was huge PITA to get the blower wheel off -- in fact the dang bolt snapped on me and I had to melt the blower wheel off with my Wagner Heat Gun. Huuuuuuuge PITA! But I got the old assembly out and have the motor AND blower wheel on order. SO in this case, I will be replacing BOTH parts that folks have said cause issues. Yeah, it cost $60 more for that blower wheel, but it's good peace of mind that I will be putting a new balanced one in there and thus help prolong the life of the motor by minimizing vibrations. Will also make for a quieter dryer. I will let you know how the finished repair goes once I get the parts. We really like this dryer and got it for $100 so I don't mind the time or the expense in doing the repairs. Our clothes will dry faster with the new blower motor getting up to full speed. I did have a question though... Has anyone had bad luck with this repair where replacing the blower motor did not solve the problem and it ended up being something else like the board?
