I would just replace the operating thermostat. Thermostat heater = 6.9 k ohm. Just checked that. It's within the permitted range. I'll buy or order one tomorrow. And KurtiusInterupptis: For why the "engineers!" comment? You wouldn't have any applicances to fix if there weren't any engineers to design them wrong. -TL
