I have seen this happen due to the wiring that runs up into the freezer door through the lower hinge becoming damaged- saw one iith a nicely crisped lower hinge that occurred by the wires grounding to the hinge itself; since this happened as the Mrs. was opening the freezer door, there was a small, brown telltale spor on the floor a few feet in front of the freezer.
