I stumbled upon this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgGNlZCcIHQ

While researching Staber washing machines.

It appears to be a Whirlpool branded top loading, horizontal axis machine.

The opening appears to be much larger than the Staber one. (Though I have not used or seen a Staber in person, I have watched their videos.)

Has anyone ever come across another top loading horizontal axis unit?

I know the benefits of a horizontal axis unit are:
-Lower water use (Energy efficiency due to less  hot water used)
-No transmission (Lower maintenance cost and less power used to spin extra weight)
-Gentler on clothes means less wear and tear on the fabric
-Less tendency to walk when washing heavy items like towels and blankets because they're evenly distributed in the basket.

But the idea that the only thing keeping all that water off of my floor is a door latch and a rubber seal kinda bothers me. Also, I like the ability to throw in that last sock or pair of boxers I dropped on the way to the machine after I've started it.

Hence I think the next machine I ever get (Couple years in the future though) will be a top loading horizontal axis.

Most (if not all) FL's do not have a water level that reach the Door opening.

Most (if not all) FL's can be paused to add that "last sock".

Good to know. The ones at the laundromat are the only front loaders I have watched while running. Everyone I know has an old top loader with agitator.

I remember when I was a kid, they had washing machines and dishwashers running in Sears. These display models had the skins removed and plexiglass put over them so you could see them in action. I remember watching all the pumps and transmissions working.

They don't do this anymore.
