About 2 weeks ago our washer started making a loud knocking noise during spin cycles.  Everything still worked.  After about 3 washes making this sound the tub stopped spinning.  The pump still worked so most of the water was removed but the clothes were very wet.

What I have tried so far:

Removed the cabinet

Disconnected the pump from the motor

Diconnected the motor from the motor coupling.  The motor coupling appers to be fine, both plastics sides and the rubber ring in the middle are in tack.

After turning the end of the coupling attached to the gear box the tub turned about 2 inches and then stopped.  I assumed something was wrong in the gear box and tried to remove it.  After undoing the three screws that hold it to the bottom of the washer it came down about 2 inches and got stuck.

After some more reading it appears I should have removed the agitator before undoing the gearbox.  I have removed the top part of the agitator including the plastic part you have to remove with the 1/2 inch ratchet extension.

My question is, am i on the right track to removing the gear box and if so how do I get the next screw off the agitator (attached picture).  I have turning moving the screw both to the right and left but it turns about half a turn and won't move anymore.

Thanks, Michael

I believe that requires a 9/16" deep well socket.

I have used a 9/16 deep well and held the base of the agitator so I could turn the screw.  After about a half turn in either direction the nut tightens up and will not turn any further.

You're dealing with good ol' rust... and o-ring gasket. Normal threads, turn CCW and give it an OO-RAH. Off she comes.

Thank you for the advice.  I have been able to get the nut and agitator off.  At this point I think the problem is inside the gear casing.  When I turn the part of the motor coupling attached to the gear casing the clutch (I think, its a silver tub shaped part, pictured below) turns sometimes but then stops.  The gear casing keeps turning and I feel a grinding inside the casing.  After the grinding stops the clutch starts turning again.  Is this normal or where my problem is?

Thanks, Michael

Yep, tranny's shot. R2 the 'gearbox' as you call it, and the clutch while you're at it. (The thing the finger is pointing to.)
