Dryer heats up and tumbles the clothes. When you select a cycle to dry your clothes and the dryer gets to the end of the cycle the dryer will not stop. The dryer will continue into the next cycle and so on and so on. You can advance the selector knob by hand to the end of the cycle and the dryer will continue to run. Any advice? JD

If it is not automatically advancing to the 'end' of the cycle (which is what it sounds like you've stated by 'manually'moving it to the end), you'll likely have to replace the timer/cycle selector. I believe you're series 70 is the same 'old faithful' I have as a backup as well as the same issue back in the day. Replaced the timer/cycle selector and she went back to being an 'automatic' dryer  . Hope this helps,Niko

http://www.repairclinic.com/SSPartDetail.aspx?s=t-110.96575100-%3d%3di2030&PartID=2030 Sounds like your timer motor contacts welded together inside the timer.....timer link above...could try to carefully take that silver cover off of the timer and see if they are welded and carefully separate them with a razor blade if so, and sand the contacts carefully with an emery board.... with the dryer unplugged of course. If you slowly advance the timer around, at the off positions you should hear a "click" when the contact arms release the contacts from each other, if you do not hear these clicks good chance they are welded... """The dryer will continue into the next cycle and so on and so on."""

It is advancing to the end of the cycle by itself. I just turned the selector knob to the end of the cycle to see if it would turn off. JD

I had advanced the selector knob around to the off positons and you can hear clicks. JD

Got ya... I don't mean this to 'knock ya' or anything but couple more questions for a 'process of elimination' type thing: 1) Is this on automatic dry, i.e. you set it to the little 'star' for 'normal' dry or you can go further/backwards for more/less dry respectively? 2) If yes, are you sure this is not in "wrikle guard' mode where it will continue to run for about an hour, with no heat, at the end of the actual 'dry' cycle? Does it buzz and buzz letting you know 'hey i'm done but i'm still going to keep these from wrinkling" ? 3) Try a timed dry for maybe 10-15 mins and see if it quits when it gets to the off area WITHOUT manually advancing. Just weird given it's advancing on its own but only shuts down completely when manually advancing. I'm on board with Pegi if this keeps up to tackle the timer....

You will hear clicks also when the heat contacts make and break....but if you slowly move the timer knob thru the off portions of the timer and it does not shut off sounds like the motor contacts are welded together inside of the timer...

Also check the push-to-start switch as these are notorious for sticking closed and causing this issue - should measure open cicuit across switch terminals

The dryer does not shut down when you advance the selector knob. The dryer continues to run. I had advanced the selector knob so I wouldn't have to wait to see if it would shut off by itself. JD

With Dryer stopped .... set Dial to OFF position ... then push Start Button .. what happens ?

Note: The on/off button has not worked for years. We have just set the selector knob to dry clothes. I set the selector knob to the off position and pushed the on/off button and the dryer continues to run. JD
