Thankfully my wife was home to catch the problem prior to turning the house into a waterpark.  The kids were wondering why it was raining in the house.  I was wondering if the beer was cold and how many we had.

Anyway, the washer just keeps on filling, even after the agitation cycle begins.  In fact it never stops filling.  Even pushing in the timer knob won't stop the water from filling the machine - it will stop the agitation, but not the water, which obviously it did before.

My wife pulled the lever on the hose fixture to shut off the water.  When the lever is pulled, water comes into the machine, even if the knob is pushed in the off position.

It's not a very new machine, but up until today it's been running like a top.  I'd like to keep it, mostly because I can't afford a new one - especially now that I'll need to replace a ceiling.

Suggestions?

If a machine keeps filling when it is turned off or unplugged you have a fill valve that is stuck open, that is the part the fill hoses are attached to...

Is replacing a faulty fill valve a difficult proposition for an apprentice appliantologist like me?

Should not be on a Maytag, take a look at where it is mounted on the back, think can get to it right from the rear??

I would think so.  Looks like a cover/mounting plate with two screws holding the valve unit in place on the other side of the plate from the back, and the opening is fairly good size.  (I'm saying this of course prior to taking it apart!)

If not, is there an alternative to getting at it, and if so, how difficult is that?
