Problem with aforementioned unit. It spins and the motor works in both ways. It doesn't agitate correctly nor does it stop spinning quickly, so I suspect this has something to do with the brakes. Video posted that shows the underside. Thinking (hoping is a better word...) that this is brakes and not transmission. Any ideas? It seems like when it was working correctly, the drum would advance slightly and then lock, sequentially. Thanks in advance, Joe

The helix is a cam riser that helps release the brake for spin. Maybe the helix is worn down. Last edited on Wed Sep 16th, 2009 12:05 am by applianceman18007260692 ____________________ "May the hinges of our friendship never grow rusty" Old Irish Saying |

It appears to me that the brake is not working, not that it is not releasing. Also, that part appears to be a Whirlpool part whereas I believe my Amana is mf'd by Maytag. Last edited on Wed Sep 16th, 2009 12:11 am by jeauxkewl |

The way that thang works is the motor turns in a direction with the tub locked in place so the clothes wont get tangled up. Then the whole shebang comes to a screeching halt and commences to go in the opposite direction. That Helix releases the brake and tub so that thang can take off like moody's goose in a tailwind a spinning like hell. If the cam riser fails to completely release the tub then you will have intermitant spin as seen on your nice movie. FYI your Amana washer IS a Maytag product but Whirlpool now owns Maytag so that is now a Whirlpool part. Jeauxkewl, if the machine is in agitate, (as I suspect it is from your explanation of your problem), you can forget what applianceman said, (he's assuming the machine is in spin). Your brake pads are worn out and possibly the brake pak but most of the time just a replacement of the pads take care of the problem. If you remove just one of the pads and you find the end that is sandwiched in between the brake pak is worn at that end, (not a smooth tapper from front to back, there will be a step), then just replacing the pads will most likely take care of the problem.

That sounds more like it. The video is of my machine in agitate. I'll try the brake pads. They are definitely worn at the end.

I'm gonna go ahead and replace the pads and see if it takes care of the problem. They are cheap enough at $13 and my hunch is if this is not the problem, it's gonna be more time and $$ than this thing is worth.... Attachment: IMG00040-20090916-0753.jpg (Downloaded 12 times)

Success! The brake pads did the trick. Thanks to you two who responded. I bought the pads locally (pricey at $30) but got the problem resolved today. Here's a video of the correctly agitating washer after repair:
