Stopped in a spin and wouldn't discharge water, and I could smell something like a burnt electrical aroma.  I disconnected the machine and waited a couple of hours.  I re-started the machine in the same spin cycle--holy cow, it began spinning and discharging water (streadily at first, then in puking gurges).  And then after about 40 seconds

it stopped with a huge clang--enough to jar the machine about 3/8 of an inch CW; and again there was a burnt electrical smell present.  It is now unplugged; my hammer is nearby.

Just signed up for your most excellent site.  Absolutely loved your disclaimer.

The water should all be drained when spinning occurs in this design, see if you can identify a very small grey loop at an obscure point on the timer dial- turn timer knob until indicator lines up with this symbol and pull(or push) knob to start. With the lid in the closed position the machine should run and agitate without any water inside. If you hear the motor binding and trying to start but won't run, turn off, unplug and remove cabinet to inspect drive system

Did as you suggested. The motor ran and it seemed to make the aggitate sound, and then the power strip the machine is plugged into flicked off. It didn't sound like the motor was binding. Thanks for your quick reply.

Could be from the motor drawing an overcurrent, peel the cabinet, untwist the pump retainers and slide the pump back off the motor and repeat that test(you will have to jumper the lidswitch to test) something might be jamming the pump, or the pump may be shot.

could be a bad Motor or bad Transmisiion.

you could remove the Motor from the Transmission and run it,

(would need to hold Motor, or somehow between your feet)
