Kenmore Gas Dryer approx 3 yrs old model#110.76652500 Sypmtoms: Dryer heats initially but quickly cools down. Dryer takes 3-4 hours to dry a full load of laundry. Initially it seemed like performance was slightly better on autodry cycle than on timed dry. Now generally poor on both. Diagnostic efforts and results: I disassembled the dryer and noted that the igniter glows orange and the burner lights properly. The burner will burn for around one minute the first time, shut down and then cycle on again after a couple minutes, but burn only 15-20 seconds before sutting off. This process repeats (15-20 second burntime). I disconnected the vent tubing and did not notice any difference in burner cycling. Air flow volume seems good, the blower is not obstructed and is operating. I resistance tested the thermal fuse and thermal cutouts, and all showed continuity. I resistance tested the cycling thermostat and one pair of leads indicated continuity, and one pair indicated 5K ohms. I do not know if this is within spec or not. I disconnected the thermal cutouts from the element cannister (but left them wired up) and the gas burner stayed on. I thought this had identified the problem. I reassembled the dryer tub, and left the termal cutouts disconnected from the element cannister (but still wired up), and the dryer reverted to the same one minute initial burn followed by 15 second intervals approximately every 2 minutes. I re-disassembled the tub and pulled the gas valve coil soleniods. I resistance tested the coils and found them to be roughly (I have an analog ohm meter) to spec: Terminals 1:2 approx 1300 Terinals 1:3 approx 500 Terminals 4:5 approx 1200 From my very novice perspective, it does not appear to be a coil problem. Could it be the thermal cutouts are not operating properly? Could it be the main timer/control switch? How can I determine the problem? Last edited on Fri Jul 3rd, 2009 06:07 pm by nadidlab |

Nadidlab, That 15-20 seconds that you say the flame is burning, are you sure the actual flame is burning or is it just the ignitor that you see glowing orange for 15-20 seconds. If it's really just the ignitor glowing and trying to cycle again, then YES, as RegUS says, "it's the gas valve coils". If you are actually seeing a flame and it stays burning longer then the 15-20 seconds when you have the hi-limit safety t-stats away from the burner tube, then most likely a venting problem. Remove the vent from the back of the dryer and test and see how the flame cycles and check the exhaust temp. You're not trying to test it with the front off are you??? The front and door have to be on for the airflow to be correct and you observe the burner thru the little peephole in front, (pull the square plastic plug out).

Just for kicks, take off the exhaust vent hose and observe the burn time.

I don't think the Coils fail because of their heat, the internal coil winding opens intermittently because of the constant heating and cooling of the Burner. (thermal contraction / expansion)
