Hi

I have a Kenmore 70 series washer Mod# 110.20722990 it washes fine, agitates fine and the water drains fine but it will not spin. And here is a twist. It will spin if you open the lid and close it again or if you just happen to be standing there with an ink pen stuck in the switch about the time it goes to spin the agitator will jerk but the tub will not spin. If you remove the pen and reinsert it the drum will spin fine. I have read of similar problems but have not read about the open the lid and close it. This works every time I just don’t have the time to stand there and open and close the lid every time it needs to spin. I was hoping this might narrow down the possibilities before tearing into this. And you have a great site Most Honorably Master.

Thanks

What would be the best way to verify that it is indeed the transmission? Is the transmission a repairable item or are they just a throw away units?

Thanks

The unit does have a nuetral drain   .... after it agitates so many times it basically kicks a Neutral pin over in the trans  .....   so whats is supposed to happen with the washer  is   agitates   then goes into the spin cycle   1st part is nuetral drain    then the timer is supposed to pause and then it kicks back on and starts spinning  ..........  If this problem happens all the time   make sure that you get a pause in the timer  .... The trans may be doing what its supposed to.... but the timer does not pause  .... when you lift the lid and close it again you simulate the pause in the timer.......and then it starts to spin

Have seen a few where this get reversed   when its supposed to do the nuetral drain it spins then the timer pause and the unit gets stuck in Nuetral and it starts putting a spray rinse on the clothes   if this happens its the transmission

It does pause after it agitates for probably a minute or two. So I am going to assume that the transmission is bad. Are these units repairable? Can you take them apart at all? I looked up the price and they are about ½ the price of a new washer like the one I have. I just don’t have the money for a new washer or a transmission at this time but some times we just have to do what we have to do. Is there a break down of the transmission so I can see what is inside?

Once again Thanks

:?
Would there happen to be a "HOW TO" for transmission removal on this machine? I am going to try and wing it but if there is a guide it would help. I had the day planed to do this but it is slowly getting filled with other to do list for other people. Oh well I got the laundry caught up before I took off the outer cabinet.

Thanks

This will get the case off and the pump and motor off of the tranny. You will also have to remove the agitator before the trany can be pulled after removing the 3 bolts that hold it to the washer.

OK!!! It is a part but the only thing I can see is a little nub on the spin gear and a step on one of the levers. Can anyone tell me if these are normal? I will try to attach a picture if I can. What type of oil is in the Transmission? It looks like 90 weight to me but not sure.

Thanks

Sorry, but we have just replaced the trannys, have not taken any apart, will have to wait for someone else in here who can help you with the guts of the tranny. ;)

I found a picture of a new gear and it has the little nub also. Cleaned it and put it back in. It worked so far. I only had one load because I got it all caught up before taking apart. will try again tomorrow. Hopefully it will work for now.

Thanks again

  Still acting up. Not so sure that is the problem. :groucho: I have rebuilt auto and truck transmissions as well as small equipment gear cases and actuators for many years. I just can’t see anything in there that could cause this problem. Everything is working smoothly. Are there any other possibilities that could cause the problem? The washer is only about 4 or 5 years old and I just hate to have to get another one this soon.

  :rocketman:

Thanks

Just re-read this and had a thought...what if the "drain" contact of the timer isn't working, so that it stops for two minutes and then goes to neutral. That would fit in with the lid opening causing it to start spinning.

Yes, Mad Mac, I had read that also and thought it odd but forgot to dwell on it, but thiis is not right.

There has to be a first pause for the unit to reverse for the drain, then a second pause for the tranny to set up for spin.  This does sound like there is a pause missing in the timer, the washer should have drained before it will spin, and the last two minutes of the agitate cycle the washer would be dead if the lid switch was broken. There has to be 2 pauses after the wash cycle not just one.  Is there just the one???
