Got to my sister's house and found her 2 year old LG washer to be a little musty smelling.  My visit was to fix those roller balls which have seemed to have stopped rolling.  It was pretty easy to git those covers off.  Just one #2 phillips screw, slide the cover towards the door, and pull up on the cover.  Pop the retaining bar out and clean out the ball seats.

What I found in my sister's washer was rather yucky!  They don't use any fabric softener at all.  Bleach and hot water aren't used as much.  Liquid HE detergent is their primary detergent.  They started leaving their dispenser and door propped open by my request a year ago.  I know they've cleaned their washer once.

After popping the agitator arm cover off, I found a whole mess of gookus that must've been building up since the beginning of time.  Wasn't even close to smelling very nice and it felt like the proverbial slime bucket award.  With my trusty steamer and toothbrush, I got all those pieces nice and cleaned up...and yes...I got those darn roller balls to roll again.  :D

I still have a bleaching run to do to the washer.  I've already ran a sanatize wash with some auto dishwasher detergent.  Smells better but still needs work.  I've linked my pictures of the surprise I found.  Hope you didn't just eat...  ;)

Liquid detergent is more prone for mold build-up...

May be better to use powder...

Have you looked under the bottom lip of the Front Seal ?

It would be good to do a "Tub Clean" cycle w/ bleach ... once a month

(it uses a higher water level to get to that Seal)

Turn Power ON..

before selecting any cycle, Press & Hold the Extra Rinse (Tub Clean) button on the right, for a few seconds

The top Pre-Wash Light will go ON, and "Tub Clean" w/instructions will appear in the Display.

Do you need the Service Manual ?

you only got about %2 of the gunk out by cleaning those baffles. the whole inside of the tub is coated with that stuff.

try 1 cup of bleach and some cascade in the clean washer cycle

Thanks fer the directions on the Tub Clean.  I've already ran 2 cycles of that already.  Spent two hrs observing the last one to make sure what was going on.  ;)

Took a look under the seal before the Tub Clean mode.  Used the toothbrush and got as much as the gookus out of there and off of the front of the tub as well as the lip of the tub.

Not sure I can convince them of moving to powder...although I will suggest it.  I told them to run the Tub Clean once a month...we'll see how well that turns out the next time I come out here.  :D

I saw a few bits of crud floating in the last rinse of the 2nd Tub Clean...I'm sure I've gotten most of it but probably not all of it.  It was rather impressive to see how it got the water around the rest of the tub.  Kinda reminded me of frothing egg whites.  :D

I wonder how many other LG washer owners have used their Tub Clean...and of those who have used it...how many have popped those covers off to see how good of a job the Tub Clean is doing under there...  ;)

I found the Service Manual on the LG website...thanks!  :D

not all of the LG models have "Tub Clean"...

maybe only the newer models...

otherwise you'll have to use the "ArmStrong" routine ...

Well...I don't see myself going around working on anyone else's LG or any other front load washer anytime soon.

I think most of the time...owners don't take the time to read over their user's manual fer all the different features that can make their investment a little better.

I wonder if the places that people bought their front load washer with some sort of Tub Clean option would send out a notice fer them to use it.  How many places actually demonstrate features on appliances any more?  :(

Did a follow up a couple of weeks ago...the smell is coming back.  They're still not doing the tub clean once a month nor are they leaving the washer door open.  Not even wiping it down.  The seal was starting to git gross again.  I ran 2 tub clean cycles again.  I'll be popping up there again in about 2 weeks.  We'll see how well they will follow through.

As a side note...I don't have the problems they have on my Samsung front load washer...I guess it's because I use powder and keep the door open all the time when it's not in use...and I run a bleach load once a week!  ;)
