I have an old top loading Kenmore washer that shakes and moves a lot during the spin cycle, I have taken it apart and replaced some parts trying to correct the problem based on what I have read here and in the manual, I replaced the following:
- Base assembly (pn 285771), it was corroded and couldn't level the machine well, somewhere I read it may be cause, it came with new suspension pads
- The suspension plate (pn 389299) including the plate pads, it came with the base assembly, so I just decided to use it.
- Motor to transmision coupling (pn 285753A), it was damaged.
The machine is very well leveled now, but still shakes a lot during spinning only.
Reviewing the assembly diagram more carefully I noted that on the left hand side bracket (where the suspension springs engage) there are two springs depicted, while my machine only has one as the two brackets on the right hand side.
The diagram identifies the missing spring as item 15, counterweight spring. Could this be the cause of the machine shaking so much? If I order the spring where does it engage? Is there actually a counterweight on this machine?
Finally, when I replaced all the parts mentioned above and tested the machine I noted that the tube leans to the right-front corner of the cabinet, I pushed it back to the aproximate vertical position and it comes back to an inclined position.
Any help will be much appreciated!
I have been dealing with this problem for a week and can't fix it (and don't want to dispose of the machine unless absolutely necessary).

Let's trade pictures-- I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours.
Here's a pic showing the tub suspension springs.
Now, you post a pic or two of yours.

Thanks for the pictures!
I will post some as soon as I get home tonight.
I can tell for sure that my machine does not have the "Rear counter balance spring" shown on your pictures, it might be that it broke off and got lost during one of the many times I have moved the washer around. It still has the 3 suspension springs yet.
I can see that the bottom end of the counterbalance spring attaches to the base frame, but is it on the rear side of the base frame or on the left?
Could it be this missing spring the cause of the machine shaking so much?

Yes, when it started shaking so badly I laid it on its right side to pull it apart from the bottom opening, that was before I found your site and learned the easy way to remove the cabinet.
I just replaced the base frame yesterday and the suspension plate, I am expecting new suspension springs to replace the old ones since I don't know how to test them. The machine still has the old ones installed, except for the counterbalance spring which didn't show up anywhere when I dis-assembled the washer.

| Need the counter balance spring to off set the weight of the motor, attaches to a hole in the base and another hole at the base support for the tub assy....if the hole is rusted out just drill another hole close to where the first was located..

Problem solved, installed a temporary counter balance spring to see if it would correct the shaking and it did. I will replace with the right spring as soon as it comes in the mail.
I have attached some pictures showing the inclination of the tub and motor assembly prior to installing the spring and the appearance of the tub after the installation.
I inspected the old base assembly and the slot where the counterbalance spring was supposed to be attached was corroded and broken open, couldn't find the old spring tough.
Thanks everyone for the help!
