Sudden death!  Our electric Maytag Performa (model # PYET444AYT Rev 15, about 4 years old) will not start.  At all.  On any cycle.

My wife came to check on it and found a half-dried load of laundry, and the dryer will not start.  It doesn't groan, click, buzz, blink, or even smile when we try to start it.

If left alone, we can hear a slight buzzing (ticking?) from the dial area.  (Sounds like an old timer motor to me.)  If I place my fingers across the moisture sensor (inside the drum, just below the door) this noise stops for about 30 seconds, then resumes.

I have power to the dryer as far as the junction block where the wall cord terminates.  Dunno after that.  (The inside light burned out a while back, so can't tell anything there.)

The door switch meters properly. (3 connections, 2 white wires, one red.  One is NC, one is NO, both work as advertised.)

There is some kind of sensor on the blower housing, in the output part.  It has 4 wires, arranged in a plus sign config.  Metering across one way shows continuity, the other way shows a short.  Dunno what is normal there.

This dryer had  recently gotten plugged pretty badly when a down vest let go of a seam.  I cleaned it all out, and it has functioned normally since then (about a week).

I know electricity, but not appliances, so I can follow instructions on troubleshooting.  I just don't know where to go from here.

Any advice? Or does anyone know where I can get a schematic?

How's the Belt ?

How's the Thermal Fuse ? (not the 4-wire one, a smaller 2-wire device)

The belt was ragged, but intact, so I replaced it while I was in there this evening.  I had seen I needed a new one when I was cleaning out the down vest mess last week, and ordered one.

Where is this 2 wire fuse located?

Sounds like a bad thermal fuse. Tech sheet inside control panel.

Thanks for the tip.  I'm on the road for a few days, so I'll check on that when I get home, and let you know.

Maytag thermal fuse kit LA-1053. Comes with hi limit also.Replace thermal fuse(2 in package, one for electric dryer and other for gas.Just read paperwork) and thermostat with blue sticker on top of heater always. Check vent hose for restrictions which can cause therm to go.

Yep.  Thermal fuse.

I got home this evening and got my meter out.  (Dryer unplugged, wires detached.)

The sensor on top of the heater shows about 4-5 ohms.  Close enough to a closed circuit.

The smaller one on the side is wide open.

I installed a fused jumper on its leads to test it, and the dryer fired right up.

I'll be ordering the kit!

Thanks, all!

The part arrived in short order.  Good service on the parts, guys!

Installation took about 10 minutes, because I had "help" from a couple of inquisitive boys  :D, and we are off and running!

Thanks again!

Hey there!

So, my problem sounds like the one described above. I have also taken it apart and gone through belt and other troubleshooting hot spots, but one question - if the timer still runs (it will still click quietly and continue to turn around the dial), could it still be the fuse? I do not have a way to test it, but will invest in one if need be.

Thanks!
