Hi:  My Whirlpool dryer (Model LG7011XPW0) went out with a bang today (so to speak).  Apparently while I was out the dryer let out a loud BANG (this report is according to my teenage son).  I came home and the dryer was off......I opened to find slightly damp sheets & towels (not an unusual event with my dryer).  So, I start it up again and note that something isn't right.  While it sounds like it is running - when I open the door the drum is not turning.  When I announce that the dryer has broken - my son tells me about the loud bang (I then told him when an appliance makes a loud bang.....turn it off & call me to let me know what happened.....but I digress).  I imagine my belt has broken.  So, my questions is ... am I guessing correctly about the belt and is it hard to replace?  The only other repair the dryer has needed was drum rollers quite a few years ago.  I think this dryer is 18 or so years old.  It is part of an unmatched set (as we replaced the lemon matching washer about 15 years ago).  So, I guess I'm also wondering if it's worth repairing or should I think about replacing my elderly and energy inefficient washer & dryer?

Thanks,

:)Adrienne

Changing the belt is a lot easier than the drum rollers, pick your style below and get it done...  :)

You will notice dryers do not have energy star ratings, there is no way to change how they work so newer ones will use the same energy as your good old one...:?

Hi Pegi:

Thanks for your quick response.  I have the guts of my machine exposed and have extracted the dried & shredded belt.  I have one question though - the belt tension pulley came off when the belt broke (that must have been the loud bang).  I assume it anchors into the two slots below the motor shaft on the right side of the drum....is that correct?  Should I replace the belt tension pulley when I replace the belt?  It seems ok but I'm kinda thinking since I'm in there.....

:) Adrienne

The belt holds that idler assembly in place, when the belt breaks the idler will fall over....if the roller is sticky or ratchity when you spin the roller then replace it while you are in there... :)  The 341241 belt package will show how to replace that belt also.

Thanks....I am ordering from RepairClinic.com now.  Just want to check one thing first.  Is the 341241 belt package you mention a RepairClinic.com part number?  In my search on RepairClinic.com I came up with the belt repair kit for my Whirlpool which had an item number 587636 which includes the belt, rollers & idler pulley and installation instructions.

Kit is good, 341241 would be just the WP belt number.

Hi Pegi:

Got my parts today and the installation went smoothly.  Of course I did manage to drop a screw down the lint filter on top - sigh.  But, other than that my dryer is back to it's usual self (thankfully as my husband announced he was completely out of socks & underwear......it was panic time)

Thanks again for the help!

Adrienne
