The internal light on my Whirlpool fridge went out - and so did the digital display on the temperature setting for the freezer and fridge. Tried replacing the light - did not work. Is there a fuse someplace? The manual is not helpful. The fridge seems to be working and cooling properly.

Thanks!

Sorry, found your site and posted at work thinking someone might have a quick generic answer.

Whirlpool Conquest. side by side, model number GS5SAXNL00.  I look around and see if I have a tech sheet.

Thanks!

Whirlpool seems to not be able to find that tech sheet, could you double check the model number??

Perhaps this wiring sheet will help, has some diagnostics.

Thanks.  The diagnostic mode unfortunately requires the digital display on the RC/FC control panel - and the lights are out.  I actually tried it just to see if the digital display would "kick start".  No go.  Thanks anyway - I appreciate your time.

I know that this is an older topic, but I have the same problem (with the same brand).

Did anyone ever find the answer?

Last Saturday my wife noticed that the fridge lights were off. I was at work (firefighter) and these problems always happen when I am on duty. I assured here that I could probably fix it by replacing the switch. Nope!

Not only were the lights off but so were the control panel lights. (As mentioned above.) I decided to test the light bulbs in a lamp and noticed that when ALL of the light bulbs were removed that the control panel digits came back on. If you screw in ANY one of the three light bulbs, the control panel lights go off.

This is a challenge for you guys. What is going on?

Whirlpool mdl GD5RHAXNB00
I tried the diagnostic but that does nothing but turn off the entire appliance.

Help. So far two service techs are baffled.

Do not see this shown in the TECH SHEET however wonder if you tried unplugging the box for a few minutes to see if it would re-set the main board back by the compressor?

I felt like I have had it off for a couple of times, but just to make sure, I did it again. I had it unplugged for 3-5 minutes and screwed in the bulb during that time. When I plugged it back in nothing was lit up. When I took out the bulb , the numbers came back on.

Thanks for trying.

I was hoping that 'watchman' could tell us what finally happened.

HELP!

I have read of this in one of the tech forums, and perhaps here also...seems like the display board or the main board had to be replaced, or both, let us wait for others in the know give their input to this...did you check the wires where they go thru the hinge area to see if the were breaking?

There is no 'hinge' area. The control unit (user interface) is inside, in the corner.

There are two boards outside, down by the compressor (I think). They are the Receiver board and the Emitter board. I don't know much more than that.

There appear to be two board in in control box. But they appear to be connected to the knobs. Unless one of these is one of the boards I mention above.

Can you email 'watchman' to see what may have been the problem? Nothing happens when I try to email.

I have no clue, just see the tech sheet shows two main controls, one being located by the compressor....someone else will need to help you with this ref as we have not seen one of these...I just remember this problem listed in one of the tech forums, more than once..;)

This could be a loose connection, putting the bulbs in causes voltage to drop so that there's not enough for the display to work.

Thanks for trying, but that is not really much help. I am sure that it is a short or a loose connection. The question is; Where?

Remember, the light bulbs do NOT come on when the display goes off. I can also have the light switch completely disconnected, and it will do the same thing. It will also do it with ANY of the three sockets in the fridge. How do we explain that?
I have put a meter on the switch and the buld socket. They both test at over 110 v.

I have done all I can think of so far. I have spent $125 and ordered a control board.
If the board is bad then that might explain why I can't get it to go into the diagnostic mode also.

PLEASE HELP!

Just in case anyone ever has this problem. I can tell you how I fixed it.

I ordered a new CONTROL BOARD. This cost over $125 with shipping.

It was VERY EASY to replace. All it too was snapping in some plugs. It was located in a small white, plastic box, down by the compressor.

As soon as I plugged it in I screwed in a light bulb and all was fixed.

It's going to be The_Electronic_control part# 2252189. Back by the compressor.
