Hello Appliance Giants!

Everything was going along just wonderfully with my Frigidaire from 1982 (which came with the house). Since yesterday the refigerator temp has gone to 50 degrees and the freezer temp to 20 degrees. The ice maker has water in it. The fridge doesn't sound any different, no build up on the freezer walls or anything. I've spent the last 2 hours browsing other messages with similar problems but if anyone knows what I can try specific to my machine it would be appreciated.

Thanks - Steve

This appears to be a sealed system problem - it's not worth spending the money for this kind of repair to a top freezer unit of that vintage. And, a newer one will cost you considerably less in electricity to run.

As Mad Mac pointed out a sealed system is suspect.  Make sure that the compressor is running, and nit just tripping out on it's overload protector.  If just a start relay then fix it if it's the compressor that ditch it.

How do you check to see if the compressor is running?

Compressor is located in the lower rear of the unit. You should be able to hear it.

Hi Pegi,
As with other posters, I took the back panel of the freezer off and there was frost over everything. I melted it all and the fridge worked great for a few days. Now the fridge temp is back to 50 (the fridge is full too). The compressor works fine. Is it the A.D.C. that's the problem? Right now I can see frost on the back panel of the freezer.

Thanks,
Steve

Item 6 is your defrost timer. It's mechanical, you're going to need to wind it round to determine whether it activates the defrost heater.

Ok MM,

I turned the dial till the fridge turned off (defrost mode). Didn't get a whole lot of defrosting happening so I opened the back of the freezer again and melted all the frost off the coils which had accumulated since this past Subday.. The freezer temp and fridge temp are fine now. Now do I just wait and see if the defrost mode happens by itself, and if so, when does it usually happen?

Steve

You will need to see if the defrost heater or the termination thermostat at the top of the evap coil is bad, use your ohm meter....the thermostat will need to be checked when it is cold, will show bad when it is warm..
