Moved to Florida a year ago and inherited this GE Refrigerator GSS25WGMACC which was about 3 years old. From the beginning had to hand-close the little rubber ice door or else it would gather frost and clog up the icemaker. It even partially defrosted a couple of times that this happened-- not sure why, as the door may have been open only a little bit (it has to snap shut, and this may not always happen). Have read the thread about the possiblility it is the solenoid for the door. I also get gunk running down in the dispenser inset that looks like mold or rust. My model is not on the list. Does it have a 4 year moisture warranty? From what others have said, this may well be a problem that GE has been aware of, but I guess since my model is not on the list they probably will charge me full freight to fix it. Replacing the solenoid may not fix a possible underlying problem that seems to allow condensation around the electronics. Any suggestions before I call the local GE service guy?

Wow!! Am I glad I found this site!! After posting I decided to call the GE "moisture problem" number 1-800-437-9283 and to my surprise I spoke to a human being on Saturday!!

They said my refrigerator is covered by the recall and that a technichian will be out on MONDAY to check it out. She said "If the problem is due to moisture it will be repaired free of charge." I told her that I had just finished cleaning out everything (threw out the ice which was all congealed together, tossed out partially defrosted meat, used hot water, q-tips, a sponge and a mirror to get up into the high reaches where all the black mold had accumulated), and wondered if that means the techniciian will not find the signs of moisture if it now looks good. She said no, that they can tell even if it is cleaned up. Maybe I should take your advice and leave the door open as it sometimes is left by kids and guests so that it looks bad again when he looks at it!! Actually I am quite sure the ice door was closed before we went away on a week long trip, but it may have been slightly ajar as it does not alway snap shut securely. Well, we shall see and I will let others know how we fare.

Just wondering... Is the "moisture" problem different than the "ice door sticks open" problem? The open door could cause moisture, for sure. Also the moisture could cause failure of the solenoid that fully closes the door, so either might be the cause of the other. How will they know how to decide? Which came first...? One time, so much ice and frost had collected around the ice bin that it may have cut off some ot the circultation. I assume that the ice would only accumulate because the ice cube door was left partially open, not because of the "moisture" problem. Also, a relative told me that food spoilage may be reimbursable under our homeowners policy, but I assume that would refer to a power outage rather than mechanical failure of the refrigerator.

The GE service man arrived here ahead of his appointment, as he was already in the neighborhood. He took a quick look and said he would replace both doors and even throw in new handles as they were showing some staining. The doors should arrive within a couple of weeks. If you do not hear more from me you may assume that all was fixed to our satisfaction.

WOW! Am I glad I found this thread.

I am having the exact same problem with GE Model GSS25JMC CC Serial SA227887. If you could tell me where to look for information I will gladly do it myself. I found out I have this problem because I called it in to see if it was covered under my home warranty. The tech came out and told me about the bad solenoid, door cover etc and said it would not be covered under warranty. They want $145 to fix. Anyway, I have no idea how old the fridge is, it was here when I bought my home in 2001.

One more thing as long as I am being a pain in the patoot....

I have seen mention of a class action suit in Florida, I would like to get in on this if applicable. I don't suppose you all have that info?

Thanks again for this site, I am just beside myself with glee that I may be able to get my fridge fixed without spending a ton of money. I really appreciate all the time and effort you all put into this site.

OK, I did some research. There is a website - http://www.bringgoodthingstolife.org with all of the necesaary information regarding this class action lawsuit. You can even register to be included in the suit if you like.

According to this site, my fridge is eligible to be repaired for FREE by GE. Yeah! I will call them tomorrow and keep calling until I get the right person who will help me.

I just got word from the people who initiated the class action lawsuit in Florida that soon, within the next two weeks or so, the list of model numbers pertaining to the lawsuit will be updated.

Also, GE is giving people with model GSS25's a very difficult time about repairing or replacing this model. Apparantly they were doing it until about two weeks ago when they changed their minds about it.

I will keep you posted as I find out more information.

OK, anyone who has one of the fridge's on the list can get their warranty extended and get their fridge fixed. Just go to the site I mentioned in an earlier post, all the info you need is right there.
