Before calling a repairman, I want to try and figure out what is wrong with my icemaker. The water dispenser works, so the water connection is not an issue, the arm is down, but the icemaker does not fill with water (and obviously does not make ice). The fill tube is not frozen over, but since I don't understand how the process works, I don't know if the problem is with the icemaker itself, or it's not getting water from the valve at the bottom of the fridge. From looking at the parts available, I see that there is a water valve that feeds the water dispenser and the icemaker? Could this be the problem? How do I troubleshoot this?

If I end up calling a repair man, what could be the range of cost for an icemaker worse case scenario? I know this is not giving much information, I just don't know where to start, and after searching the forums I could not find the answer.:(

Locate the water valve at the back and apply power to it with a "cheater wire", if the I/m then fills, your valve is ok and you need I/m

Is the IceMaker actually already filled with water (ICE) and it isn't ejecting ?

The Water Line, inside Fridge, near Wter Filter, could be frozen ...

Hi Kdog,

I think I understand the concept of testing the valve...but I am WAY behind in the technical learning curve. How would I exactly use a "cheater" wire to power the valve and isolate the problem? I dont know which contacts/terminals I need to "short" or jump and I dont want to the make the problem even worse by doing the wrong thing.

The I/M is completely dry, it's not frozen over, it will just not fill...no water comes out from the tube

Ok, this might seem really stupid. For some reason (probably out of desperation) I filled the icemaker with water "manually" and the thing just now cycled and dumped ice into the tray....AND I think it added water (hard to tell but I think I feel at least SOME water in the IM) Is this more leaning towards the valve or the IM itself?

See the Icemaker Troubleshooting Flowchart for other things to check.

Well, after over a year of not working, it's making ice! I don't even want to look at it, afraid it might quit again!

Between the I/M itself and the inlet valve, which one is more likely to be an intermittent problem? The ONLY thing I did was to fill the tray with water, it seemed to have gotten the thing "jump started" anyone heard of this?
