I have a GE Potscrubber model GSD2220Z04BB that wont start unless I throw in a quart of water. If I don't upon start it spurts a smal gush of water out of the center pivot and stops, if I do it starts slow but works. This unit gets used infrequently about once a week or less.

So... it doesn't fill with water at all? Or you're just adding extra?

Oh great and powerful Oracle, please allow your vast stores of knowledge to flood into my dishwasher.

FYI This is my renters DW so I don't have as much firsthand experience as I would like. He reported that it would not wash unless he dumped a quart or so of water in it. If he does not it will go through the cycles and the dishes would still be dirty and the soap dispensed but dry. If he does it washes. He uses it about once a week.

Yesterday I disarmed the latch lockout and opened the door a crack, started it and it spurts out a small initial pathetic little burst then stops. Looks like it is just recirculating what was in the unit and not filling. I let it go for a while and it just sat there, no more water entered and it did not fill. I stopped it then dumped in a quart of water, it slowly starter to pump more, the rotor arms started slowly turning, I let it go through the full cycle. This morning I went down prepared to tap on the fill valve but it started on it's own.

What do I try next Oh Great One?

Make sure the hand valve for the water is turned on-- seen this many times, especially with renters.

Then, check continuity of the water inlet valve coil.

if you have a Harbor Freight Store near you,
they have these meters, normally $ 4.99, w/battery

but sometimes on sale for $ 2.99
if on sale, print sale page and take to store

Double checked the valve and it is open fully. Also have noticed that the longer between washes the longer it seems to take it to start filling with water, he used it yesterday and this morn I had the door open with the lockout tripped, for about 4 minutes it looked like it was just pumping a trickle of water that was already there then it started flowing and spraying. I checked the valve, I zeroed my multimeter and the valve reads 3/4 ohms.

If the water is just trickling in, make sure that the supply line(wherever you have the water supply hooked up from your d/w) is not obstructed in some way - remove line from valve and open to verify good water pressure, otherwise you'll need a new valve as yours may be clogged with calcium etc.

Remove your belt, and allow your pants to "ride down" whilst doing this as it will give your wife the impression you are professional in every way

The Water Valve should read 850 Ω

What's the voltage at the Water Valve when it should be ON ?

Thanks for the reply kdog, its not clogged, ot only trickles in at the beginning, if it has been used recently or I prime by adding water it takes off.

Thanks RegUS_PatOff, perhaps I am reading my meter wrong but it says 3/4 way to one, I'll check incoming voltage tonight.

RegUS_PatOff, checked my meter manual, looks like it is about 850 ie 3/4 plus the way to one X1000. Kdog I am getting 110 at the valve when first on, its full now and running through the cycle, will check again after it finishes and drains. Could it actually be OK but he does not use it often enough?

You should only see line voltage(120 v) at the valve during the filling increments of the cycle, for approx 2 min at a time, once the unit has allowed for the fill, voltage will be removed from the valve. - exactly what do you mean when you say "once I prime it, it takes off"? are you referring to the wash motor not starting?

kdog, this is in a rental unit,

to review

"This is my renters DW so I don't have as much firsthand experience as I would like. He reported that it would not wash unless he dumped a quart or so of water in it. If he does not it will go through the cycles and the dishes would still be dirty and the soap dispensed but dry. If he does it washes. He uses it about once a week."

This week every time I try it it seems to work, all the meter readings seem right, I think it is just that he does not use it often enough. I am a little stumped right now.

Run the unit and cause it to fill/drain several times consecutively, it may be that the valve coil gets warm and opens

Not following you there kdog "it may be that the valve coil gets warm and opens" the inlet valve? I have run it more this week than he probably has in 5 months, three times tonight, I am stumped. I have found some references like this ...

"Hello, I have a GE potscrubber dishwasher and yesterday it quit pumping water. the motor hums but it does not seem to get as much water as it needs. the knob moves and clicks in proper spots and i can get it to "prime" by pouring water "

and this...

"If you go on vacation, over time of non-use, your dishwasher will lose its prime. That is to say that the water in the dishwasher water pump has dried out and requires priming for the pump to operate. Adding water to the bottom of the unit restores the prime and function of the dishwasher. "

But this to me would have to mean the water totally dried up. Perhaps this single guy is not using it as often as he says.

Yes this refers to the circulation motor when the seal dries out and the motor will not run, is that what is ocurring, or does it fail to get water?

Thanks kdog. Again a lack of first hand knowledge is my problem, I'll quizz him again tomorrow. I just cant believe this happens in a week. I don't think I waited long enough the first time I tried it. From from start the pump runs and a minute or so later 110 hits the fill valve an water runs in, it fills and starts pumping.

I checked with the renter, he claims it happens if he has not used in a week. Is this a pump failing? He is going to show me the next time it happens.
