I have a 5 year old GE Profile Arctica refrigerator model PHS23SGPBS and the feezer compartment is not getting cold.  The freezer setting is on zero, and the temperature has been sitting at 15-16 degrees for around a week with almost nothing in the freezer and the door closed all the time.  The refrigerator side seems to be working OK, staying around the setting of 37 degrees.  I have checked the seals and plugged/unplugged refrigertor to no avail.  The refrigerator seems to be very quiet (I have the ice maker off), but I am not sure how much noice it should be making.  I made an appointment for GE to come out but I am wondering if there is anything else I should be trying or if there is a better option for repair than GE (I am in the San francisco Bay Area).  I doubt it matters, but we left the door open for a few days around a few months ago, but it seemed to work fine for the last few months after we closed the door.  Any help of advice is appreciated.

Paul

I have the users manual, but not the repair manual.

When we left the door closed for 3 days the temperature in the freezer dropped to 6 degrees, but as soon as we opened the door it jumped back up to 17 degrees, and only went down to 16 after a day.

Yes.  It is warm/hot.  Especially in the middle.  The temperature has now gone back down to 4 degrees (from 16 yesterday).

check the condenser fan motor (the one next to the compressor) stall it with a pencil and make sure it starts back up on its own without lagging.
