So, my tenants report that the freezer in this refrigerator/freezer, stopped freezing.  Fridge is not as cold as it was.  Air seems to blow fine though lower vents were blocked with ice. Interior back of freezer was covered in ice. Tenant also noted that freezer was set at coldest setting and she didn't remember setting it that cold, turned it down, and it became non-functional.  Tonight she is going to remove all food from the entire thing, unplug it and let it defrost in hopes that it will do something to help.

1) The unit is 45 miles away SO before I make the drive and take the back off the thing tomorrow, what should I look for ?

2) I'm told by Whirlpool that condenser and evaporator are still under warranty but I have to call one of their dudes, which is fine, out of curiosity, whats the going rate for a house call to diagnose?

Thanks, printing.

I found this thread http://www.applianceguru.com/forum1/19172.html about the drain being plugged and causing issues.   Would this possibly be the problem.?  She did say the bottom drains were blocked.  Would that cause the freezer to not freeze anymore?  If the evaporator is wrapped in ice?  Would this cause the refrigerator area to not work as effectively as well?

An Iced evaporator only goes from bad to worse and eventually everything degrades - read the FAQ's and see if you can have the tennants advance the timer into a defrost cycle. If the fridge is warmed prior to diagnosing, it is a little trickier

how does one do that on the roper?  Keep in mind I am not in visual range of this machine.  Didn't find much in the FAQ for Ropers

Roper top mount = Whirlpool top mount - Basic control knob or electronic control?

Timer wheel is accessed through the bottom of the R/C compartment ceiling (small hole w/funny looking plastic screwdriver slot)

If it's all iced up in behind the rear panel of the freezer, one or more of your defrost components have failed; Defrost Heater, Timer, or Termination Bi-Metal

If you can get the user to advance that wheel until it makes a loud click, it may begin to defrost

I'm guessing its best to leave it on and plugged in until I can get there tomorrow?

the bottom, refrigerator compartment, near the control dial

F/C = freezer compartment (in this case the top)

R/c = refrigerator compartment (in this case the bottom)

I called tenant, she had already unplugged it. She has now turned the freezer temp control to "off" and plugged it back in, to defrost. Got this info from here http://www.kwantlenappliance.com/technology.htm

Still valid?

No, those instructions are for electronics, yours has a mechanical defrost timer in which the wheel must be advanced

Gotcha, will the fact that she unplugged it and turned the control to off, have an effect on the timer or should we still follow your suggestion?

No it shouldn't

But the fridge must be plugged in when defrost is activated

So use screw driver to turn timer wheel which is a "small hole w/funny looking plastic screwdriver slot" until she hears a loud click. And then maybe it will defrost? Leave control in "off" position?

If it begins to defrost, some sizzling will be heard (ice melting), then the fridge should start back up within 30 min.

RepairClinic Part #'s:

Heater = 1175560
Timer = 1175387
Bi-Metal = 1200042

Thanks but please clarify, should she set the freezer control to something other than "off" Like 4 or something (I don't remember what it looks like)
