Hi all,

I just bought a used freezer and refrigerator (ca. 2002-2003) to replace the ca. 1985 ones I had that were energy hogs.  I am curious as to whether the freezer will be much better than the one it replaced, though.  The new one is a Kenmore 253.21711103 and the old one is a Monkey Ward's 4684.  The appear to be identical for the most part (made by Whirlpool I presume) except the newer one is built a bit chinsier in the shelf supports, lacking a plastic cover for the capillary tube and evaporator tubes between the evaporator/shelves, flimsy outer cabinet, etc. and the compressor is different.  But mostly they are the same (manual defrost, evaporator is the shelves type).  Can I expect much better efficiency from the new one than the old?

The refrigerator is probably much more efficient because the one I replaced ran a pretty heavy duty cycle and seemed to defrost much more than required with the mechanical clock.  But it might be a little hard to tell since I did them both at the same time.

if they are manual defrost freezers then the only power consumption is from the compressor

if you still have both you can just read the model tags, the tag lists current draw in amps

the higher the current draw, the more it costs

although, being different maufactures and different model-year decades,
they both could have a Compressor that uses "x.x" amps, but one may run twice as long
to maintain the same temperature, because of different insulation, etc ..
