Our refrigerator worked fine until about 2 weeks when we lost power for about 2 days. A few days after regaining power we noticed that our refrigerator was warming up into the 50's. We did study this forum looking for anwers. I found that the coils were heavily frosted over. I then found the defrost timer and advanced it until I heard the loud click, all became quiet, the frost quickly melted away and all was well again, for a few days. I think the timer still works because I still hear it click on and off periodically. I now wonder if the Defrost heater & thermostat are failing periodically. I again advanced the defrost timer to start the defrost cycle and noted the frost on the heater did not quickly melt. I have tried to test the continuity on the heater and thermostat but have not found the appropriate place to attach the probes. What do you think I should do next?

What's the temperature of the Freezer ?

How frosty were the coils ?  Clogged, so no air could blow through ?

The temperature in the Freezer is about 10 degrees F.  And the coils are very clogged.  When we manually defrost the freezer, everything seems to work fine for several days.  Then the fridge side starts getting warm.

The Defrost Heater is usualy either good or bad (yours seems to be good).

The Defrost Thermostat could be bad.

The Defrost Timer contacts could be bad.

You may have to do some voltage measurements during Defrost.

Based on the maytag manual (page 2-14) that you had attached, I have done the continuity testing on the Defrost Timer. The Defrost Circuit (1st Click, pins1 & 2) has continuity, the Compressor Circiut (2nd click, pins 1 & 4) has cntinuity, but theTimer Motor Circuit, when the dial was left as is (pins 1 & 3) does not.  Does this mean that  my Defrost Timer is bad and should be replaced?

Pins 1 & 3 are the Timer Motor which should show some resistance, but may not read on some "continuity testers".

Are you saying that the defrost timer is fine?

I just saw the defrost heater glowing red. Can I assume that the heater is working correctly based on that?

If the Timer Motor moves, the terminal 1 & 3 are good.

If you can see the Defrost Heater Glowing, then it's good, too, although the Timer contacts 1 & 2, or the Defrost Thermostat could be flaky

How can I determine if either one of those are bad?

Easiest, cheapest way would be to replace Defrost Thermostat.

may not be available separately, unless the right generic replacement ...
