So I finally replaced the oven igniter, following the estimable instructions provided by the guru, and my oven works again. However: When the burner first fires up, it does so with a whoomp and a flare-up that is a bit disconcerting. I sponged soapy water on the fittings behind the range and found no leak. Any idea what could be causing this?

What replacement part number did you use ?

(continuing with your old post is a better idea and sometimes gives needed info)

The Repair Clinic part number is 74007498. However, my wife reminds me that the oven did the whoomp thing before the old igniter failed, so I don't think that's the issue...

When the Ignitor reaches temperature (& current), the Gas Safety Valve opens.

It may take 30 seconds for the gas to reach the Ignitor (longer if Oven Door is open)

Might take a look at the burner to see if it has holes clogged up or the cross over slit clogged, this would cause what you are describing.....and make sure the igniter is mounted correctly close to the burner...

Thanks for your help. What is the cross over slit?

The slit in the burner by the igniter that lets both side of the burner light at the same time, if it is clogged one side will light then the other side will go poof when it finally lights due to the gas build up in the oven...

That seems to have solved the problem. Thanks again.

Since you seem to know your way around these things, maybe you can answer another question for me: Is it normal for the igniter to stay on after the burner lights? I seem to recall that with an older Caloric range I had, the igniter would glow only when the burner was cycling on...

Yes, it is normal that the igniter remains lit and glowing.

The igniter opens the gas valve and also holds it open but only while glowing...good system...;)

or you may be thinking of Gas Dryers, they use a different system where the Ignitor onlys glows until the Gas is lit.
